The use of a precise scale during order Pick by Weightpicking helps to count large quantities and ensures the quality of order picking. The integration of different scales is possible in the LUCA-Server possible without any problems. A static scale directly in the picking process ensures the quality much better than a weight check in the final inspection.
The weighing process and calibration
With the help of various picking systems, e.g. Pick-by-Light, the picking compartment and the quantity are signalled. The withdrawal is acknowledged on the display. The number of pieces in the withdrawal tray starts flashing and the tare of the balance is set to zero. The employee places the parts on the scale. The "Quantity remaining" is shown on the scale display. If the quantity is correct, the balance display shows "0" and the LED turns green. The remaining quantity can be stored in the looking storage compartment and acknowledged. The process is not very fast, but guarantees a very high quality.

Weighing and counting, but correct
The most important criterion for using scales in the picking or shipping process is the stability of the weights of individual articles. For articles where the weight cannot be precisely determined, the use of a pick-by-weight method is not possible. If the weight of the articles is stable, the question arises when it is best to weigh them. Unfortunately, there is no simple answer to this question. Many factors must be taken into account in the topic.
Catalogue of questions for finding solutions:
- Are the weights of all articles comparable or do they differ greatly from each other?
- How large are the weight deviations in the tolerances of the individual articles?
- Which quantities are picked?
- What performance must the process deliver?
- How can the workplaces be designed?

Avoid frequent planning errors
It is often claimed that a checkweigher directly from the point of failure at the conveyor system is sufficient for the quality assurance of the consignments. Unfortunately, that's seldom the case. Without tare detection at the beginning of the conveyor section, correct net detection is hardly possible. In the case of cardboard boxes, even humidity plays a very important role. Sometimes the weight of the lightest item is within the weight tolerances of the heavy items, making correct weight checking impossible. For this reason, the checkweigher is best used directly in the picking process and not at the end.
When calculating the total tolerance, at least half of the lightest article should always be taken into account. However, the result is not satisfactory because almost every shipment becomes faulty.
