Are data glasses a sensible solution for order picking or just a fascination?

What is Pick-by-Vision?
In warehouse logistics,Pick-by-Vision is a picking method with data glasses that is intended to help the picker quickly find his storage location (bin location) and guide him through the picking process without errors. Does the picking method really work in a warehouse?
How does Pick-by-Vision work ?
Pick-by-Vision actually works very simply in logistics. The picker (user) puts the data glasses on his nose. The data glasses are connected to the warehouse management system via WLAN. The order is started. A small projector projects content onto the glasses in real time. The order picker can see the image by "squinting" upwards (augmented reality). The data glasses show the employee the most important information: Storage location and quantity.
That's all the order picker needs to make a pick from the storage compartment. Afterwards, he scans the item or storage compartment with a barcode scanner. The stock is corrected in real time in the warehouse management system. The error rate should be minimal.
What support and flexibility does Pick-by-Vision offer ?
The lightweight data glasses make Pick-by-Vision very flexible. We will show you in a moment whether the technology really supports the employees in intralogistics as a picking method.
Are the data glasses suitable for the warehouse?
The data glasses are absolutely unsuitable for the warehouse. Although the employee has his hands free when picking, he has to constantly "squint" at the small image, which makes the work very unpleasant and tiring after a short time. Concentration diminishes very quickly. His field of vision is severely restricted, which can also be very dangerous in a camp. If someone does not wear glasses at all, the data glasses can violate his privacy. There are special versions for people who wear glasses.
When we presented the Pick-by-Vision order picking process at Logimat 2015, there was a lot of excitement at first. Afterwards, however, several studies proved that the data glasses are not suitable for the warehouse.
No wonder that the first missions with the Pick-by-Vision were quickly over and instead of the data goggles, other technologies such as Pick-by-Tablet, Pick-by-Watch or even Pick-to-Light and Voice Picking were used instead.
What does the order picker actually need?
That is really the crucial question! Actually, it's all about information. For simple processes, it is enough to enter a storage location and the number of pieces. There are enough other technical possibilities to give the employee the information. So why the data glasses? No idea!
The simple information can be shown on a Watch or a tablet. Why then use the disadvantages of data glasses?
Are Pick-by-Vision and the data glasses a toy of the decision-makers?
Some managers and decision-makers are desperately looking for innovations in order to present themselves better to their colleagues and the press. The picker and his needs are often forgotten. It would be good if the decision-makers would first spend a week picking with the data glasses themselves for 8 hours a day.
We strongly believe that after such an introductory phase, the toy will be forgotten again and thrown into the corner. LUCA is one of the professional suppliers of picking systems.
That is why we no longer offer Pick-by-Vision
in the commissioning department.
If you want to use Pick-by-Vision , then get in touch with our competitors. These companies specialise in warehouse logistics for Pick-by-Vision :
- Picavi GmbH
- Cinovation GmbH
Other suppliers and providers play no role at Pick-by-Vision . We see no advantages in Pick-by-Vision solutions, only disadvantages.
Data glasses are not suitable as a picking method for picking at Pick-by-Vision . For assembly support, research, simulations and training, the data glasses can be used excellently. Wearing data glasses all the time can make you tired and nervous. It restricts the field of vision. The error rate increases very quickly with the time spent working. There are other picking systems that can be better used in intralogistics and warehouse logistics.
From our point of view, Pick-by-Vision has only disadvantages and no advantages. It is also no longer innovative or special.
