Pick-by-Vision 2025

A practical solution with data glasses or just a novelty?
Pick-by-Vision glasses

Pick-by-Vision is an innovation in logistics using smart glasses. The picker receives information via Wi-Fi and can see it directly in their field of vision. This augmented reality supports picking as a visual picking method.

How it works

Pick-by-Vision actually Pick-by-Vision very simply in logistics. The order picker (user) puts on the data glasses. They are connected to the warehouse management system via Wi-Fi. The order is started. A small projector projects content onto the glass in real time in the field of vision. The order picker can see the image by "looking up" (augmented reality). The system shows the employee the most important information: storage location and quantity.

The picker does not need any further interaction to remove an item (pick) from the storage compartment. He then scans the barcode of the item or storage compartment with a scanner. The stock is corrected in real time in the warehouse management system. The error rate should be minimal.

Who can work for 8 hours wearing glasses?

What support and flexibility does the system offer?

Its lightweight design makes Pick-by-Vision flexible. We will now show you how this technology really supports employees in intralogistics as a picking method.

Are Pick-by-Vision suitable for warehouses?

This solution is not ideal for order picking. Although the employee has their hands free during order picking, they have to constantly "squint" at the small image, which makes the work very uncomfortable and tiring after a short time due to the changing line of sight.

Concentration levels drop very quickly. The field of vision is severely restricted by the glass, which can also be very dangerous in a warehouse. If someone does not wear glasses at all, the data glasses can violate their privacy. Special versions are available for people who wear glasses.

When we presented the Pick-by-Vision at Logimat 2015, there was initially a lot of excitement. However, several studies have since proven that smart glasses are not ideally suited for warehouse use.

No wonder that the first Pick-by-Vision deployments were Pick-by-Vision over and other technologies such as Pick-by-TabletPick-by-Watch or evenPick-by-Lightwere used at this point.

What does a picker actually need?

That's really the crucial question! It's really just aboutinformation. For simple processes, all you need to do is enter a storage location and the quantity. There are plenty of other technical options for providing employees with this information. So why use data glasses? No idea!

The simple information can be displayed on a watch or tablet. So why put up with the disadvantages of data glasses?

Are smart glasses just a toy for decision-makers?

Some managers and decision-makers are desperately searching for innovations to improve their image among their colleagues and in the press. The order picker and his needs are often forgotten. It would be good if the decision-makers first spent a week picking orders themselves for eight hours a day wearing the data glasses.

We strongly believe that after such an introductory phase, the toy will be forgotten and thrown into a corner. LUCA is one of the professional providers of picking systems.

That's precisely why we offer Pick-by-Vision
for picking.

There are several better alternatives to Pick-by-Vision. If you have any questions, please contact us. We will be happy to advise you.

Conclusion

Smart glasses are not suitable for use Pick-by-Vision a picking method in Pick-by-Vision applications. However, they are ideal for supporting assembly, research, simulation, and training tasks. Wearing smart glasses continuously can cause fatigue and nervousness. They also restrict the field of vision. The error rate increases rapidly with the duration of work. There are other picking systems that are better suited for use in intralogistics and warehouse logistics.

In our view, Pick-by-Vision only disadvantages and no advantages. It is no longer innovative or special either.
