Pick-by-Frame®
Flexible order-picking technology for Multi-Order-Picking
Thanks to the modular frame design, your existing order-picking carts can be quickly equipped with mobile pick-by-light systems. The order picker can process multiple orders simultaneously and receives optimal support while working (Multi-Order-Picking). The order-picking cart can be swapped out in just a few seconds.

Pick-by-Frame® refers to a picking method in which a mobile pick-by-light system is dynamically docked onto a picking cart. The entire picking system is mounted on a frame with its own wheels. The system operates identically to Pick-by-Cart and, thanks to the frame, requires less equipment. Just one frame for many picking carts!
The number of frames depends on the number of employees, not on the number of picking carts.
Preparing the boxes
Before picking begins, the shipping cartons or boxes must be prepared. The cart’s barcode is scanned. Depending on requirements, the items are either placed directly into the cart compartments (automotive or production) or into shipping cartons or transport boxes.
For crates, the crate barcodes are assigned to specific locations and orders on the cart. For shipping boxes, the corresponding box sizes are assigned to orders and placed on the cart. A large box can also occupy multiple locations on the cart.
Depending on the volume, multiple cartons or boxes may be assigned to a single order. Preparation is carried out as needed. It can take place directly at the Pick-by-Frame® or at a separate workstation.

The mechanical coupling of the frame
The Pick-by-Frame® has its own wheels and is attached to the picking cart using guide rails. The two structures are usually mechanically connected via an innovative magnetic coupling.
The “permanent electromagnets” hold the Pick-by-Frame® and the picking cart together. The Pick-by-Frame® is released from the cart by pressing a button that deactivates the permanent electromagnets.
Activation of orders
After the Pick-by-Frame® system is mechanically connected, the barcode on the picking cart is scanned. The open order items are loaded, and the process can begin.
RFID technology can also be used as an alternative for the automatic identification of the trolley. The LUCA software manages the connections between the Pick-by-Frame® system and the trolleys and dynamically coordinates the necessary switching operations.
A batch of orders on a trolley can also be processed by multiple employees and frames (e.g., multiple levels or zones in the warehouse).
Stationary frames (without wheels)
In the meantime, the stationary frames have also been put to use. The frames are firmly anchored to the floor. The picking carts are positioned behind the frame.
This system is ideal for loading picking carts with cardboard boxes. In this example, the prepared boxes are retrieved from the flow rack according to the pick-by-light indicators, labeled with a pre-printed label, matched with the picking order, and placed in the designated storage location.

Employee Login
If desired, the system can support employee login. During confirmation, the employee ID can be sent for each picked item. The information is typically processed on the host system.
Pick-by-Frame® process
At LUCA, the picking process is tailored to the customer’s needs. Customer-specific requirements are our top priority. Essentially, the system guides the employee efficiently through the warehouse, and the technology provides optimal support for accurately matching items to orders.
Scanners are used to verify quality and other data, such as batch numbers, serial numbers, etc. Various scanners can be used in the Pick-by-Frame® process. We have a range of stationary countertop scanners and mobile handheld backscanners available.
Label printers can also be integrated into the process as needed. All details regarding equipment and processes are coordinated with customers and planners and documented in specifications.
Replacing the battery on the Pick-by-Frame®
Modern lithium-ion batteries typically last for one or even several shifts. The battery’s charge level is monitored directly on the battery itself. The Pick-by-Frame® system is designed so that the battery can even be replaced while the machine is running or during a job. After the machine is restarted, all displays light up automatically.
What is Pick-by-Frame
A battery, pick-by-light displays, a scanner, a printer, and Wi-Fi are mounted on a mobile frame. The “frame,” equipped with all the picking technology, is attached to a picking cart and provides optimal support for the simultaneous picking or sequencing of multiple orders.
Once the task is complete, the frame is uncoupled from the cart. LUCA-Server controls the entire process. Pick-by-Frame one of the best manual picking systems.
