Just-in-sequence - top declaration in 2024

What does just-in-sequence mean?

The term Just in Sequence (JIS) describes a type of delivery in procurement logistics. The JIS process is a further development of just-in-time (JIT) delivery. The delivery of necessary materials for production is delivered in quantity and type as well as in sequence at the exact time required for production.

The procedure

Electronic data interchange (EDI systems) and communication between buyers and suppliers are essential to ensure smooth procurement in accordance with just-in-sequence, to determine requirements and to minimize the effort involved in the supply chain. A typical area of application is the automotive industry. Car manufacturers operate this type of delivery to perfection.

The parts are delivered to the assembly line at the right time and in the right sequence and position. The final assembly of the components to the existing structure then takes place there immediately.

Just-in-sequence production is based on the production cycle. This form of procurement logistics is only possible with excellent transportation planning. The task of transportation planning is to keep inventory and transportation costs as low as possible. Elementary features here are determining the optimum quantity and calculating the correct time of delivery so as not to interrupt continuous production.

Advantages of procurement logistics - Just in Sequence

  • No inventory costs for the recipient
  • No stock on hand at the consignee
  • Delivery of the modules to the assembly line
  • Minimal space required for installation
  • Production-synchronized variants for final assembly

Disadvantages of procurement logistics - Just in Sequence

  • High communication effort between customer and supplier
  • High dependence on the supplier
  • Risk of production downtime in the event of complications

Conclusion

When implemented consistently, the advantages for companies outweigh the disadvantages. The process minimizes capital commitment, warehousing is almost completely eliminated and the goods are delivered at the right time to supply the vehicles in the pearl chain with the right modules. No notification is required in the process.
