What is a picking list?
A picking list or paper list (often referred to as a picking list) contains a list of items, fields and storage bins for order picking. The paper list can include customer orders as well as production orders. As a paper-based document, the picking list is one of the classic picking methods. The list contains all relevant information for the picker that is required for complete and correct order picking.
In the case of order-parallel picking, several picking lists may exist for one customer order. In the case of item-oriented picking, however, several orders can also be combined in one picking list (Multi-Order-Picking, Pick-by-Frame®).
What should a picking list contain?
The order picker in the warehouse must be provided with all the relevant data, fields and instructions for completing their tasks and picking the items in order to carry out all transactions correctly. In addition to the picking quantity, the sequence (picking route) of the load unit to be picked should also be taken into account in order to optimize the time in the warehouse. In detail, the picking list should contain the following information and fields:
- A unique identification number
- A unique barcode
- Customer information and e.g. also batch no.
- Product code and/or designation Stock-Keeping-Unit (SKU)
- Number of positions
- Item number
- If necessary, also a precise article description
- Quantity of units to be removed
- Storage bin or storage compartment description
Electronic picking list
Due to increasing digitalization, the use of WMS systems such as SAP in logistics and transactions in the process, printed paper lists are becoming less important. Efficiency reasons are forcing companies to switch to modern computer-aided structures such as Pick-to-LightPick-by-Frame® or even Voice Picking or even Here, when picking lists are prepared and processed, stock levels are reserved, withdrawals are recorded, differences are logged by means of corrections and further checks of stock levels and/or order picking are generated. The order status and provision of goods can also be determined and further paperwork can be generated, for example from SAP.
Conclusion
Picking is one of the most important tasks in the warehouse. The picking list is increasingly being replaced by the electronic picking list. Various picking methods can be used for order picking. The optimal transaction between the picker and the picking method used has an impact on the quality of his work.
